One of the ways that our country is helping to keep our streets safe is the implementing of a system to regulate who is allowed to purchase firearms. This is done by the government putting into place an instant firearm background check system that looks into the background of the individual to examine certain aspects of their personal information. A firearm background check is a way to make sure that guns and other types of weapons do not fall into the wrong hands and are used to commit crimes.
There are a lot of benefits to using a firearm background check to make sure that individuals purchasing firearms are not criminals, or even worse, terrorists. The laws that put the firearm background check system into place make certain groups of individuals ineligible to purchase firearms. These groups include previously convicted felons and military personnel who have been dishonorably discharged from the armed forces.
One of the ways that a firearm background check is completed is using a database that was set up by the FBI. There are millions of individuals who have been added to the list of those who were deemed ineligible to purchase guns and weapons, so it became increasingly more difficult to keep track of these people. In response to the growing list, the FBI developed what is known as the National Crime Information computer system and database. This database, which is used in firearm background checks, keeps a record of everyone who has committed a crime in the United States.
One of the first things that a gun dealer has to do before being allowed to sell an individual a firearm is to gather some personal information on the individual. The gun dealer accomplishes this by having the individual fill out a form that will contain the person’s name, ID number, date of birth, sex, and race.
The first step in the process of a firearm background check is that the gun dealer makes a toll free call to a specific number. During this phone call the dealer gives out certain pieces of personal information of the individual who desires to purchase a firearm. The dealer will provide the individual’s name, date of birth, sex, and race. The clerk in charge of the firearm background check will then check the person’s information against the Triple I database, the prohibited person file, and the Wanted Person Index to check if the individual is ineligible to purchase the weapon.
If the individual comes back with all negative results on the firearm background check, then the dealer is given an authorization number that allows him to sell the firearm to that particular individual. This is a basic run through of what a gun dealer does to determine whether or not a particular individual is eligible to purchase a firearm.
