Immigration Background Check Process
There has been a rising concern in national security in the past eight years. This increase in concern stems from the terrorist attacks our nation suffered in 2001. Our government has taken a number of precautions to make sure that we are kept safe and to help reduce the chances of an attack of that magnitude from happening again in our nation’s future. One of the ways they increased security for our nation is by implementing a more effective immigration background check system for individuals who are applying for visas and U.S. citizenship.
There are a lot of different aspects to conducting an immigration background check on an individual applying for citizenship in the United States. One of the first aspects of an immigration background check is what is known as an Interagency Border Inspection System Name check. The individual seeking citizenship has their name run through this database in order to assess whether or not there is any national security risks and public safety law enforcement issues.
The next step in conducting an effective and thorough immigration background check is an FBI fingerprint check. This particular background check will use the individual’s fingerprints to check and see if the individual has any criminal records in the United States. This part of the immigration background check is done rather quickly and is usually completed within 24-48 hours of being conducted. After the results have come back, the information is passed from the FBI to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
The third and final step of the immigration background check is the FBI name check. This part of the immigration background check process is a completely different aspect than the previous fingerprint check. This section of the immigration background check process gathers information on the individual’s criminal records. These checks generally take about 14 days to complete. Almost everyone who gets to this part of the immigration background check passes it. If a problem is encountered during this check, it isn’t necessarily because the individual has a criminal record, it simply means that more thorough examination and research is needed to determine the problem.
These are a few steps in the process of conducting and completing an immigration background check. These checks are a great way to screen individuals who are seeking citizenship in the U.S. and to make sure that these individuals are safe before granting them citizenship.
